Living in the Southern Hemisphere there is not a big change in seasons. However, this is one bug that signifies that the Christmas season is here. They can be found at night bouncing frantically off the sliding glass doors, attracted to the light filtering out onto the deck. In the morning they are scattered over the deck, usually dead or well on their way to being so…




These look very much like the beetles we call June bugs. They appear right as summer is about to start and yes, bounce of the screens. Their feet stick to the screens and it feels yucky if they walk on you. The must be related . . .
Yep, I’d say, having spent the first 29 years of my life in Canada, that is exactly what they are, June Bugs, or a close relative. Of course in Aus the temperatures are just right for them to appear near Christmas time and thus the name Christmas Beetle.
